The drugs which antagonize the act of vomiting are known as anti-emetic. They are symptomatic treatments only and do not treat the underline cause. Vomiting follows stimulation of the vomiting center in medulla, closely associated with this is the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) which is sensitive to many drugs and to certain metabolic disturbances. Stimulation of vomiting center also occurs following actions on other areas such as the vestibular apparatus of the ear in motion-sickness, the cerebral cortex in psychogenic vomiting and also multiple peripheral receptors. Vomiting is invariably preceded by a sensation of nausea, as a protective reflex.

Mode of action:

Ipecac

It contains emetine alkaloids. When given in sub emetic doses, it reflexly acts as an anti-emetic and expectorant.

Active constituents are essential oils, polyacetylenes and traces of cicutine. The characteristic symptoms relate mainly to brain and nervous system connected with GIT disturbances.

Irisvers

Nux vomica

Dosage:

Adults:

1 to 2 teaspoons thrice a day.

Children:

1/2 to 1 teaspoon thrice a day.
